It’s important to take advantage of conversation and historical items passed down within out families from generation to generation. This this collection we experience a collection of poems that focuses on the active acceptance of who they are. In The Album a young person shares with us the pictures in the album that have assisted in telling her family’s story. In Blackness we hear the joys of being Black, what it means and how it manifests in life. There is something quite beautiful listening to poetry that is good for the soul. An ode to encourage everyone to love who they are because they can’t change it.
Connecting to Your Ancestors
First memory
Old pictures
Flashes like water running through
your fingers
sun so hot above
but reflects off the wet sea of a great gift
Given to all of us.
She held me in one hand
Her left I believe
I came like a light
that wasn’t supposed to show through the darkness
for many more months
but as momma says when I make a decision
I run with it, fast, so fast
dedicated, so dedicated
as the marathon runner did
I made my way into the world
Bursting into a new place
experience
the sound of crying
not from the lungs inside me
but her
this person
this woman
this beautiful creature telling me
“fight baby girl, breathe baby girl, you’re such a fighter”
