Scarlett is a wonderful and passionate college professor that teaches creative writing. This is an area of focus that she fell in love with because of the relationship that her mother and her had to journaling, positive affirmations, and remembering on a day-to-day basis how amazing you are. Scarlett's life changes when at the age of 11 she is diagnosed with Emery–Dreifuss Muscular Dystrophy, which affects her joints, heart, muscles and her ability for them to move and grow properly. But today as she stands in front of her classroom and starts with their journaling assignment, she is asking them to do one thing, write about a wish. More specifically a wish about something that they wish they could change but they know they cannot. This is a story about a young, strong, determined woman who stands in front of her students and shares with them one of the most difficult stories of her life, the day she woke up and all she wanted to do was make a snowman with her friends but instead she was faced with the fact that who she was the day before is not the person she will ever be again moving forward. What we realized through Scarlett's story is that no matter how much we change on the outside, or are affected by something out of our control, we can still thrive, still be successful, and we always have the ability within us not only to dream but to work towards making those dreams come true period.
One Wish Snowman
(Scarlett, a woman in her late- twenties struggles to write something on the board. She is an absolutely lovely human being with a smile that warms hearts, but she’s also different and special in her own way. Scarlett wears braces on her legs, one arm is wrapped and she leans on a crutch. Her personality is one of acceptance of others with a heart that wants the same acceptance in return. She takes a break for a moment, looks to the audience, smiles, turns back and continues to write. She finishes, lets out a sigh and references what she has written as she speaks to the audience= her class.)
Good morning class today is no different than any other. In true Professor Edwards fashion, we are going to take the first couple of minutes of class to follow this writing prompt I have written behind me. As always, I want you to take your time and really think, contemplate and truly decide how you want to address this prompt. This is after all a creative writing class, so I want you to dig deep. I want you to think about potentially writing a poem, a short story, commentary, or a commercial. Be creative, be fearless, be brilliant.
